#Burkina_Faso’s President Ibrahim Traore has called for a #continent_wide #awakening, stressing that Africa has no choice but to embark on a #Revolution for development and unity in the face of what he described as 'imperialist manoeuvres', speaking at a forum in #Ouagadougou on Friday.
“Those who claim to be neutral have either understood absolutely nothing or their brains may be switched off. We need to make this clear: #neutrality is #not an #option,” he told a #Pan_Africanist delegation.
Traore said that attempts to #erase the #ideas of former president Thomas Sankara had ultimately #failed, noting, “Today, more than ever, we realise that the man, yes, the #flesh, has gone. But the #spirit remains, and the #fight goes on.”
Sankara was a military leader, revolutionary and first president of Burkina Faso - after its name was changed from the Republic of Upper Volta - from 1983 until his #assassination in 1987.
The Burkinabe leader criticised African heads of state who, he said, “hide behind a #so_called African-made #democracy, perhaps trying to #imitate (aka Inept COPYCATS;) their imperialist masters.” He urged the creation of a distinctly African model and a break with “the organisations and institutions they helped to establish in our states.”
He also claimed that the wars and conflicts tearing the continent apart, pointing to cases such as #Sudan and #Congo, were “all the result of imperialist manipulation.”
“All they want is to see us #tear #each_other #apart and #kill #one_another while they #plunder our #riches. […] There are individuals manipulated by imperialism who sit on the other side, sending them a little money, fuel, weapons, ammunition, and they kill their brothers. They roam the countryside, killing without even knowing why they’re doing it. But that’s all because the brains are still switched off,” he added.
The Burkinabe president also referred to the re-established 'Institute of Black Peoples', aimed at continuing to #educate #African_youth and encouraging them to 'board the #train of #revolution'.
