#Denmark and #Germany now building the world's longest #immersed_tunnel

Descending up to 40 meters #beneath the Baltic Sea, the world's longest immersed tunnel will link Denmark and Germany, slashing journey times between the #two_countries when it opens in 2029.

After more than a decade of planning, construction started on the #Fehmarnbelt_Tunnel in 2020 and in the months since a temporary harbor has been completed on the Danish side. It will host the factory that will soon build the 89 massive concrete sections that will make up the tunnel.

"The expectation is that the first production line will be ready around the end of the year, or beginning of next year," said Henrik Vincentsen, CEO of Femern A/S, the state-owned Danish company in charge of the project. "By the beginning of 2024 we have to be ready to immerse the first tunnel element."

'Not my King': Charles gets booed in Edinburgh; Protest reignites Scotland's independence debate

After the Queen's death, her eldest son, Charles, took over as King of the United Kingdom.

However, not everyone seems to be happy with their new monarch.

The Royal Proclamation of Charles as King was greeted with #LOUD_BOOING from #locals in #Scotland's Capital, Edinburgh.

But those boos were #drowned_out by chants of 'God Save The King' and a booming gun salute.

Shortly after this, a woman was spotted with a banner which read, '#Abolish the #Monarchy'.

She was not alone as another lady raised a banner that read, 'NOT MY KING'.

#Anti_monarchy #protesters hold signs in #Westminster after #Arrests..

Anti-monarchists staged #peaceful_protests outside the Houses of #Parliament on Tuesday, after police #threatened a #lawyer with arrest if he held up a sign reading '#NOT_MY_KING.’

#Nvidia’s #Flagship AI #Chip reportedly up to 4.5x #Faster than the previous champ

Upcoming "#Hopper" #GPU #broke_records in its #MLPerf debut, according to Nvidia.

#Nvidia announced yesterday that its upcoming #H100 "Hopper" #Tensor_Core_GPU set new performance records during its debut in the industry-standard MLPerf benchmarks, delivering results up to 4.5 times faster than the A100, which is currently Nvidia's fastest production AI chip.

The MPerf benchmarks (technically called "#MLPerfTM Inference 2.1") measure "inference" workloads, which demonstrate how well a chip can apply a previously trained machine learning model to new data. A group of industry firms known as the MLCommons developed the MLPerf benchmarks in 2018 to deliver a standardized metric for conveying machine learning performance to potential customers.

In particular, the H100 did well in the BERT-Large benchmark, which measures natural language-processing performance using the BERT model developed by Google. Nvidia credits this particular result to the Hopper architecture's Transformer Engine, which specifically accelerates training transformer models. This means that the H100 could accelerate future natural language models similar to OpenAI's GPT-3, which can compose written works in many different styles and hold conversational chats.

Nvidia positions the H100 as a high-end data center GPU chip designed for AI and supercomputer applications such as image recognition, large language models, image synthesis, and more. Analysts expect it to replace the A100 as Nvidia's flagship data center GPU, but it is still in development. US government restrictions imposed last week on exports of the chips to China brought fears that Nvidia might not be able to deliver the H100 by the end of 2022 since part of its development is taking place there.

Nvidia clarified in a second Securities and Exchange Commission filing last week that the US government will allow continued development of the H100 in China, so the project appears back on track for now. According to Nvidia, the H100 will be available "later this year." If the success of the previous generation's A100 chip is any indication, the H100 may power a large variety of groundbreaking AI applications in the years ahead.

More than two dozen civil organizations and advocacy groups are calling on the Federal Trade Commission to block Amazon’s $1.7 billion acquisition of Roomba maker iRobot. If allowed to go through, the advocates warn the deal could “endanger fair competition,” and jeopardize consumer privacy.

Fight for the Future, Public Citizen, and Athena were among the 26 organizations that sent an open letter to the FTC’s five commissioners on Friday. The groups view Amazon’s acquisition of iRobot, which they described as a “competing smart home device business” as an anti-competitive action that could harm the overall consumer technology market.

NEW WAVE of #DATA_DESTROYING #RANSOMWARE_ATTACKS hits #QNAP_NAS devices

#Network_hardware-maker QNAP is urging customers to update their network-attached #storage_devices immediately to protect them from a new wave of ongoing ransomware attacks that can destroy #terabytes of data in a single stroke.

#Singapore_based QNAP said recently that it has identified a new campaign from a ransomware group known as #DeadBolt. The attacks take aim at QNAP NAS devices that use a proprietary feature known as Photo Station. The advisory instructs customers to update their firmware, suggesting there is a vulnerability that’s under exploit, but the company makes no explicit mention of a CVE designation that security professionals use to track such security flaws.

“To protect your NAS from the DeadBolt ransomware, QNAP strongly recommends securing your QNAP NAS devices and routers by following these instructions,” company officials wrote:

Disable the port forwarding function on the router
Set up #myQNAPcloud on the NAS to enable secure remote access and prevent exposure to the Internet
Update the #NAS firmware to the latest version
Update all applications on the NAS to their latest versions
Apply strong passwords for all user accounts on the NAS
Take #snapshots and back up regularly to protect your data
The advisory applies to the following devices:

QTS 5.0.1: Photo Station 6.1.2 and later
QTS 5.0.0/4.5.x: Photo Station 6.0.22 and later
QTS 4.3.6: Photo Station 5.7.18 and later
QTS 4.3.3: Photo Station 5.4.15 and later
QTS 4.2.6: Photo Station 5.2.14 and later

DeadBolt first appeared in January, and within a few months, Internet security scanning service #Censys said the ransomware had infected thousands of QNAP devices. The company took the unusual step of automatically pushing the update to all devices, even those that had automatic updating turned off.

#North_Korea declares itself a #NUCLEAR_WEAPONS_STATE

North Korea has passed a law declaring itself to be a nuclear weapons state, according to state news agency KCNA.

The country's leader #Kim_Jong_un called the decision "#irreversible" and ruled out the possibility of any talks on #denuclearisation, it said.

The law also enshrines the country's right to use a #pre_emptive nuclear #strike to #protect itself.

Despite #crippling_sanctions, #Pyongyang has conducted six nuclear tests between 2006 and 2017.

It has continued to advance its #military capability - in #breach of #United_Nations Security Council resolutions - to threaten its neighbors and potentially even bring the #US mainland within #striking_range.

Mr Kim carried out #long_range launches and nuclear tests in 2019 following two headline-grabbing but inconclusive summits with then US president Donald Trump.

But talks between the countries have since stalled. Although the Biden administration has indicated it's willing to talk to Pyongyang, it hasn't said whether President Joe Biden would meet Mr Kim.

The #White_House also said its attempts to contact Pyongyang and overtures of help over its #Covid outbreak had gone #unanswered so far.

The US reviewed its North Korea policy last year and reiterated that "complete denuclearisation" of the Korean peninsula was the goal. Mr Biden said he would pursue it with a mix of diplomacy and "stern deterrence". Mr Kim responded by saying his country must prepare for both "dialogue and confrontation".

Meanwhile, tensions on the Korean peninsula have spiked this year with Pyongyang firing a record number of ballistic missiles.

South Korea and the US have responded with a volley of missiles and the largest joint military exercises on the peninsula in years.

#World’s Largest #Cruise_Ship to Be #Scrapped Before #First_Voyage

The ship that would have become the world’s largest #cruise_liner has been scrapped before it ever had the chance to take its #maiden_voyage.

If wasting wild amounts of resources and money is your type of thing, this is the story for you.

#Global_Dream_II was slated to carry 9,000 #passengers and was built by #German_Hong_Kong shipbuilding firm #MV_Werften to the tune of nearly $US1.4 ($2) #billion, according to the Daily Mail. It was nearly finished when the company went #bankrupt at the start of this year.

Since that happened, #no_buyer has stepped up to buy the 20-deck, 341.99 m-long monstrosity.

That means it’s now destined for the #scrap_heap. The Mail says that Global Dream II also features an outdoor waterpark and a movie theatre. Man, I really don’t get cruises.

The capacity of this ship blows the second largest ship, the Oasis-class Wonder of the Sea which is owned and operated by Royal Caribbean, out of the water (I love a good pun). The Wonder of the Seas has a passenger capacity of only 6,988. Pathetic.

Despite the $US1.4 ($2) billion put out to build this behemoth, the ship still needs about $US230,000,000 ($319,286,000) worth of work. Apparently, it is structurally complete, but equipment and passenger facilities still need to be finished.

Eagle-eyed readers will have noted the “II” in the ship’s name. Yes, there is a twin Global Dream, but it hasn’t been given the ax… yet.
