#Filmmakers #Sue AT&T to #Block_Pirate_Sites & #Disconnect #Repeat_Infringers

A group of independent movie companies has filed a #copyright_infringement lawsuit against AT&T.

The Internet provider, which has over 80 million subscribers in the US, faces far-reaching demands. In addition to #millions in #damages, the filmmakers want the #ISP to terminate the #accounts of #repeat_infringers and #block_access to sites such as #The_Pirate_Bay and #YTS.

Over the past several years there has been a drive to hold US-based ISPs liable for copyright infringements carried out by their customers.

These Internet providers are accused of not doing enough to stop copyright infringers on their networks, even after receiving multiple ‘copyright infringement’ notifications.

The copyright infringement allegations can have real consequences. In 2019, a Virginia jury ordered Internet provider Cox to pay a billion dollars in damages to a group of major record labels. The decision is being appealed but at the same time, other ISPs have been dragged to court over similar issues.

Filmmakers Sue AT&T
This week, AT&T, the largest terrestrial Internet provider in the US, joins the list of accused ISPs. In a complaint filed at a federal court in Texas, Voltage Pictures and its affiliates, known for films such as “After We Collided,” “Dallas Buyers Club,” “Room 203,” and “The Bird Catcher”, accuse the ISP of contributory and vicarious copyright infringement.

“For years, AT&T has knowingly allowed AT&T users to engage in online piracy, the illegal distribution and downloading of copyrighted materials, including films. AT&T provides the IP addresses used for piracy, makes the connections needed to share and download pirated films, and transmits the pirated films,” they write.

The ISP allegedly turned a blind eye to pirating subscribers, facilitating mass online piracy. The filmmakers say they sent tens of thousands of notices to the company, reporting alleged copyright infringements.

1,000+ Notices for One IP-address
In some cases, hundreds of notices were sent for a single IP address without any visible response from the Internet provider.

“For example, AT&T failed to terminate the account of its subscriber at IP address 104.5.19.25 even after AT&T received multiple notices of copyright infringement at this address. AT&T received at least 1000 notices of copyright infringement for this IP address,” the complaint reads.

In the United States, the law requires Internet providers to adopt a policy that provides for the termination of accounts of repeat infringers, under appropriate circumstances. AT&T references this in its terms but according to the filmmakers’ complaint, this policy is not sufficient.

Profit Motive?
The lawsuit specifically claims that AT&T willingly keeps repeat infringers on board because that adds tens of millions of dollars to AT&T’s bottom line.

“[O]nline piracy is lucrative for AT&T. AT&T profits from subscriptions to its internet services. Instead of taking simple steps against illegal pirating, AT&T turns a blind eye and continues to collect its customers’ subscription payments every month.”

These and other allegations will need to be backed up with further evidence, but the filmmakers are convinced that AT&T is liable for both contributory a

Two Just Stop Oil activists have soiled a Vincent Van Gogh “Sunflowers” painting in the National Gallery by throwing cans of Heinz tomato soup over the masterpiece.

The activists, named by the group as Phoebe Plummer, 21, and Anna Holland, 20, both wearing Just Stop Oil t-shirts, entered the London gallery and sullied the artwork, worth an estimated $84.2m, at around 11am.

They then glued themselves to the wall beneath the painting. The Met Police said officers arrived rapidly on scene at the National Gallery and both protesters have been arrested for criminal damage and aggravated trespass. Officer are now de-bonding the protesters.

The largest #electric_school_bus #fleet in the US just #launched in #Maryland

#Montgomery_County_Public_Schools, one of the largest #school_districts in the #US, has deployed the single largest electric school bus fleet in the country.

Last school year, the school district saw the delivery of its first 25 #electric_buses and installed electric #infrastructure at one of its transportation depots.

It’s now added 61 more electric #buses to its fleet, for a total of 86.

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) will #replace 326 #diesel school buses with electric school buses by 2025, and it will have an entirely electric school bus fleet in 10 years.

Superintendent Dr. Monifa B. McKnight said at yesterday’s launch that, when procurement of the 326 electric buses is complete, “we are going to be #saving upwards of 6,500 #gallons of diesel #fuel per day, and immediately, this is going to cut costs by 50%.”

The Maryland school district held a #ribbon_cutting #ceremony yesterday at #Walter_Johnson High School in Bethesda with Highland Electric Fleets, which provides school bus fleet electrification-as-a-service.

Highland designs and organizes electric school bus projects for school districts; creates a subscription plan that includes buses, chargers, and depot improvements; and procures the electric school buses and manages the construction of depot upgrades within school districts.

Each school district gets to choose which make and model of electric school buses they want; Montgomery County has chosen all Thomas Built electric school buses. Some are Type C, with a 226 kWh standard battery capacity and a range of up to 138 miles, and some are Type A, which is a smaller bus.

Electric infrastructure will be installed at three more transportation depots.

Maryland House Delegate David Fraser-Hidalgo said:

Toxic pollutants can be as much as 2.5 times more prevalent inside a typical diesel school bus than inside an electric school bus.

Considering this, along with the carbon emissions caused by the 17,000 gallons of fuel that MCPS diesel buses use daily, electrifying our school bus fleets is an imperative public health, climate change, and environmental priority.

The state of Maryland’s Climate Solutions Now Act of 2022 requires all new school bus purchases and contracts to be electric by 2025.

"Our study is important because it adds to our understanding of long-COVID in the general population, not just in those people who need to be #admitted to #hospital with COVID-19," lead author Jill Pell, a professor of public health at the University of Glasgow, said in a statement.

"By #comparing_symptoms with those #uninfected, we were able to distinguish between #health_problems that are due to COVID-19 and health problems that would have #happened_anyway," the statement continued.

Long COVID occurs when patients who have cleared the active infection still have symptoms lasting more than four weeks after recovering. In some cases, these symptoms can persist for months or even years.

Patients can experience a variety of lingering #symptoms including #fatigue, #difficulty_breathing, #headaches, #brain_fog, joint and #muscle_pain, and continued #loss of #taste and #smell, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The authors mentioned some limitations including that most of the #participants were #white because the study was conducted in #Scotland, which has a 96% #white_population.

"Therefore, it is important that ethnic-specific outcomes are reported by other long-COVID studies with more ethnically diverse populations," the authors wrote.

Additionally, some of the common symptoms were also reported among a control group who had never tested positive for COVID. The symptoms that were most strongly associated with COVID infection were breathlessness, chest pain, palpitations and loss of taste and smell.
