#Coronavirus_Outbreak: #New_York buries COVID-19 #dead in #mass_grave on #Hart_Island | New York City officials have contracted laborers to bury those who died from COVID-19 in its potter's field on Hart Island as the death toll from the coronavirus reached grim new records | God Bless America.
The city has used the island since the 19th century to bury New Yorkers with #no_known next of kin or those whose family are #unable to #arrange_a_funeral.
Normally, some 25 bodies are interred each week, but since the coronavirus began to spread rapidly the number has increased. Now, about 24 #bodies are being #buried_daily, #five_days a #week, according to a spokesperson for the #Department_of_Corrections, which oversees the burials.
