At the end of World War II, millions of German soldiers fell into hands as prisoners of war (POW). While many were sent to forced labor camps across the Soviet Union, it is believed that a significant number—possibly up to one million—were deliberately executed under Stalin’s orders. These executions, carried out in secret, were part of a broader policy of vengeance and retribution for the devastation inflicted by the invasion of the , which had resulted in the of millions of citizens.

The fate of these German POWs varied depending on the region and circumstances of their capture. Some were on the , while others were to locations, where they were either or left to die from , , and in extreme conditions. The Soviet , infamous for their brutality, became the final destination for many prisoners, where they faced , , and due to . Stalin’s approach was not only punitive but also aimed at ensuring that Germany would as a military threat.
