-Sam Bankman-Fried's bail was revoked ahead of his October fraud trial, a U.S. judge said on Friday, after prosecutors accused the indicted founder of bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX of tampering with witnesses.
U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan announced the decision at a hearing over Bankman-Fried's bail conditions in federal court in Manhattan.
Federal prosecutors in Manhattan first made their surprise request to jail the former billionaire in a July 26 hearing, saying he "crossed a line" by sharing former romantic partner Caroline Ellison's personal writings with a New York Times reporter.
Bankman-Fried, 31, has pleaded not guilty to stealing billions of dollars in FTX customer funds to plug losses at his Alameda Research hedge fund, where Ellison was chief executive.
His lawyers said prosecutors mischaracterized his intentions in sharing Ellison's writings, arguing he wanted to defend his reputation and that he had a right to speak to the press.
Bankman-Fried has been largely confined to his parents' Palo Alto, California, home on $250 million bond since his December 2022 arrest.
In the July 26 hearing, Kaplan restricted Bankman-Fried from speaking publicly about his case, but asked both sides to submit written arguments on whether to detain him.
Ellison and two other former members of Bankman-Fried's inner circle have pleaded guilty to fraud and agreed to cooperate with the U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan. She is expected to testify against him at his scheduled Oct. 2 trial.

IRS whistleblowers to testify before House Oversight Committee about Hunter Biden probe
A pair of IRS whistleblowers are set to testify Wednesday afternoon before the House Oversight Committee about alleged meddling in the Department of Justice investigation of Hunter Biden.
The hearing before the GOP-led panel, scheduled for 1 p.m. ET, will feature testimony from Gary Shapley, a former IRS agent, as well as an unnamed IRS investigator.
Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., said the two witnesses have "critical information" to share about the panel's investigation into what he alleged is "the Biden family’s influence peddling schemes."
Hunter Biden's attorney, Abbe Lowell, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the hearing. Ian Sams, a White House spokesperson, said in a statement that House Republicans were "staging partisan stunts to try to damage" President Joe Biden politically.

"Google #does_not #OWN the internet, it does not #own our #creative works, it does not #own our #expressions of our #personhood, #pictures of our #families and #children, or anything else simply because we #share_it online," the plaintiffs' attorney #Ryan_Clarkson said in a statement.
Clarkson's firm filed a similar lawsuit in the #same court against #Microsoft_backed #OpenAI in June. It asked the court to allow the plaintiffs to remain #anonymous in both cases, citing #violent_threats reportedly received by individuals filing similar lawsuits.
The lawsuit filed on Tuesday claims that the company could owe at least $5 #billion.
