Saboteurs Cut Internet Cables in Latest Disruption During Paris Olympics

Long-distance internet cables in France have been cut in an act of sabotage, causing disruption to internet services across the country. This is the second disruption during the Olympic Games in Paris, after high-speed train lines were targeted in a series of arson attacks hours before the Games kicked off.

Marina Ferrari, France’s junior minister for digital affairs, said on X that in the early hours of Monday morning, multiple locations around France were affected by several “damages” that impacted telecommunications providers and have resulted in “localized consequences” to fiber optic services as well mobile internet connectivity. Internet companies confirmed the damage.

The French Ministry of the Interior, which oversees policing agencies in the country, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. French cybersecurity agency ANSSI told WIRED the problems are not linked to a cybersecurity incident.

“forever chemicals” that leach from landfills into groundwater are among the major pollution sources in the US, and remain a problem for which officials have yet to find an effective solution.

Now new research has identified another route in which PFAS may escape landfills and threaten the environment at even higher levels: the air.

PFAS gas that emits from landfill waste ends up highly concentrated in the facilities’ gas treatment systems, but the systems are not designed to manage or destroy the chemicals, and much of them probably end up in the environment.

The findings, which showed up to three times as much PFAS in landfill gas as in leachate, are “definitely an alarming thing for us to see”, said Ashley Lin, a University of Florida researcher and the lead author of the study.

“These findings suggest that landfill gas, a less scrutinized byproduct, serves as a major pathway for the mobility of PFAS from landfills,” the paper’s authors wrote.

PFAS are a class of about 16,000 compounds used to make products resistant to water, stains and heat. They are called “forever chemicals” because they do not naturally break down and have been found to accumulate in humans. The chemicals are linked to cancer, birth defects, liver disease, thyroid disease, plummeting sperm counts and a range of other serious health problems.

As researchers have begun to understand the chemicals’ dangers in recent years, the focus has largely been on water pollution, and regulators have said virtually all leachate from the nation’s 200 landfills contain PFAS. But scientists are beginning to understand that PFAS air pollution is also a significant threat.

The chemicals concentrate in landfills because they are widely used across dozens of industries and are in thousands of consumer products that end up in the facilities at their lives’ end. As the products decompose, the chemicals can turn into gas and be released into the air.

Much of that can be captured by landfills’ gas collection systems. The captured gas in some cases is run through filters or burned off in a flare. However, PFAS are notoriously difficult to destroy, and flares are not an effective way to eliminate them.

The ruling, made by the District of Columbia's Judge Amit Mehta, sided with the US Justice Department and a group of states in a set of cases alleging the tech giant abused its dominance in online search.

"Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly," Mehta wrote in his ruling.

The findings, if upheld, could outlaw contracts that for years all but assured Google's dominance.

Google said it planned to appeal the decision, which it said "recognizes that Google offers the best search engine, but concludes that we shouldn’t be allowed to make it easily available."

Judge Mehta ruled that Google violated antitrust law in the markets for "general search" and "general search text" ads, which are the ads that appear at the top of the search results page.

He said Google was not liable in the market for "search advertising" because it did not hold a monopoly there.

The decision is a huge win for the Justice Department and could have giant implications for some of the other big names in the tech world.

"This pro-competition ruling is a victory for the American people," the White House said in a statement.

Apple (AAPL), Amazon (AMZN), and Meta (META) are defending themselves against a series of other federal- and state-led antitrust suits, some of which make similar claims.

The scrutiny is part of a wide-ranging effort by the Biden administration to rein in what it views as anticompetitive behavior across a number of industries, from healthcare to groceries to tech.

For Google, the judge's decision affects a huge profit engine. In 2023, Google's search advertising business generated more than $175 billion in revenue.

Coupled with Google's YouTube ads and Google network revenue, both of which it promotes on its general search engine, advertising accounted for a staggering $237 billion of the company's $307 billion in total revenue.

As of June 2023, Google controlled 91% of the global search engine market across all computing platforms, according to Statcounter. On mobile, Google's market share was even higher at 95%.

Nearly four years ago, in October 2020, when the DOJ and states filed suit, Google's annual revenue was $162 billion, roughly half of its most recently reported revenue for the year.

The Google decision comes after a two-month trial late last year that included testimony from Google's CEO Sundar Pichai, as well as executives from search market rivals Microsoft (MSFT) and DuckDuckGo.

The bedrock of Google’s ( , ) empire sustained a major blow on Monday after a judge 👨‍⚖️ found its and antitrust .

The ruling, made by the District of Columbia's Judge Amit Mehta, sided with the US Justice Department and a group of states in a set of cases alleging the tech giant abused its dominance in online search.

"Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly," Mehta wrote in his ruling.

The findings, if upheld, could outlaw contracts that for years all but assured Google's dominance.

Google said it planned to appeal the decision, which it said "recognizes that Google offers the best search engine, but concludes that we shouldn’t be allowed to make it easily available."

Judge Mehta ruled that Google violated antitrust law in the markets for "general search" and "general search text" ads, which are the ads that appear at the top of the search results page.

He said Google was not liable in the market for "search advertising" because it did not hold a monopoly there.

The decision is a huge win for the Justice Department and could have giant implications for some of the other big names in the tech world.

"This pro-competition ruling is a victory for the American people," the White House said in a statement.

Apple (AAPL), Amazon (AMZN), and Meta (META) are defending themselves against a series of other federal- and state-led antitrust suits, some of which make similar claims.

The scrutiny is part of a wide-ranging effort by the Biden administration to rein in what it views as anticompetitive behavior across a number of industries, from healthcare to groceries to tech.

For Google, the judge's decision affects a huge profit engine. In 2023, Google's search advertising business generated more than $175 billion in revenue.

Coupled with Google's YouTube ads and Google network revenue, both of which it promotes on its general search engine, advertising accounted for a staggering $237 billion of the company's $307 billion in total revenue.

As of June 2023, Google controlled 91% of the global search engine market across all computing platforms, according to Statcounter. On mobile, Google's market share was even higher at 95%.

Nearly four years ago, in October 2020, when the DOJ and states filed suit, Google's annual revenue was $162 billion, roughly half of its most recently reported revenue for the year.

The Google decision comes after a two-month trial late last year that included testimony from Google's CEO Sundar Pichai, as well as executives from search market rivals Microsoft (MSFT) and DuckDuckGo.

The DOJ and 35 states, along with Guam, Puerto Rico. and the District of Columbia, accused Google in separate lawsuits of unfairly holding on to its market dominance in search, including search engines, search engine advertising, and search engine text advertising.
