#Apple's #Korea #Offices #RAIDED by #ANTITRUST Regulators Over #Allegations It Charges #Developers 33% #Commission

Apple's #South_Korean #headquarters have been raided by antitrust regulators after a complaint was raised by developers that it is charging them over the standard 30% #App_Store commission rate.

The #dawn raid by the Korea Fair Trade Commission (#KFTC) was reported by local media on Monday and covered on Friday by the Foss Patents blog, highlighting the ongoing #investigation in the country into Apple's alleged #abuse of #market_power.

The complaint that sparked the raid was reportedly brought by #mobile_game developers who argued that Apple charges more than the typical 30% #commission rate for #purchases made in the ‌App Store‌.

As Foss Patents points out, Apple charges 30% of the price paid by end users, which includes value added tax (VAT), making it 10% higher than the amount on which Google bases its 30% commission, which doesn't include VAT. #Apple is therefore #collecting 33% (30% of 110%), not the headline 30% rate.

The above also comes into play for the 15% rate applied to small businesses or to subscriptions in the first year: Developers in Korea get charged 16.5% because Apple collects the commission on the #gross_price which is inclusive of VAT. The additional 3% reportedly amounted to approximately 345 billion won ($240 million) in the period from 2015 to 2020.

It's a similar story in other countries where Apple operates including #France and #Italy (32.1%), #Turkey 35.25%, and the #UK (31.5%) when tax is taken into account, although no-one has yet lodged a formal complaint about the practice in any of those countries.

The development means Apple is now being investigated by #two Korean #government_agencies. In August, the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) said that it had conducted an inspection of Apple, Google, and One Store since May 17 to determine if they have #violated in-app #payment_laws, and concluded that all three companies may have done so. If the new probe discovers malpractice, the KCC could issue correction orders and impose fines up to as high as 2% of the average annual revenue from relevant business practices.

In January, Apple announced that it would comply with a new South Korean law that bans app store operators from requiring developers to use their own in-app purchase systems. In late June, the change came into effect, enabling developers to offer alternative payment systems in South Korea.

However, Foss Patents argues that Apple is acting in bad faith by making it prohibitively expensive to use alternate payment services. Apple charges a 26% commission on payments processed by other service providers, meaning that developers using a third-party payment processor in Korea would have a total cost that is about twice as high as if they used Apple's in-app purchases.

Look who's being searched: Google #RAIDED by #South_Korean #competition_regulators | May 31, 2012

Google continues to be plagued by antitrust disputes,(opens in new tab) with the most recent flashpoint occurring earlier in the week when the company's offices in Seoul were raided by the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC), inside sources are claiming.

If the reports are accurate, it would represent the second time(opens in new tab) the search giant has been swooped on by the government agency, which is responsible for regulating economic competition in South Korea.

Speculation surrounding the bust indicates it may be a response to the Internet titan's resistance to an ongoing Android-related investigation by the KFTC(opens in new tab), which the regulators feel Google is hampering by erasing documents and encouraging employees to work remotely during the proceedings.

Google has not yet issued a direct comment on the reported raid, instead reiterating an earlier statement that it will "continue cooperating with this and other government inquiries."

The investigation(opens in new tab) is rooted in a complaint lodged last year by local Internet content service operators, including NHN Corporation, who run the popular Korean web portal Naver, and Daum Communications.

The central grievance logged by the two companies is that Google uses its market dominance to manipulate smartphone manufacturers and mobile carriers on the peninsula into pre-loading its services onto devices whilst freezing out local rivals.

The South Korean government is known for placing harsh, something absurd, restrictions on telecommunications products - until late 2011, all game apps had to be vetted by a central "Game Rating Board," a move that led Apple and Google to pull out of that side of the app market.

It is not the first time that Google has faced problems in South Korea - Google's Seoul offices were also raided by the KFTC last September, while in May 2011 police swooped on the same location following allegations that the behemoth's AdMob platform was being used unlawfully to log private data.

The Asian regulatory body's latest bust compounds the legal pressure on Google at the moment(opens in new tab). Brussels recently set a 2 July deadline for the company to respond to allegations that it has similarly abused its dominant position in European markets.

Ian strengthens into a hurricane, heads toward #Cuba, #Florida.

#HAVANA – Hurricane Ian moved near the #Cayman_Islands and closer to western #Cuba early Monday (Today) on a track to hit #Florida as a major hurricane this week.

Ian was forecast to intensify rapidly and become a major hurricane as soon as late Monday before becoming an even stronger #Category 4 hurricane over warm #Gulf_of_Mexico waters before striking the west central coast of Florida on Wednesday.

Authorities in Cuba suspended classes in #Pinar_del_Rio province and planned evacuations Monday as Ian gained strength on approach to Grand Cayman and the Cuban provinces of #Isla_de_Juventud, #Pinar_del_Rio and #Artemisa.

“Cuba is expecting extreme hurricane force winds, also life threatening storm surge and heavy rainfall,” U.S. National Hurricane Center senior specialist Daniel Brown told The Associated Press early Monday.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Ian should reach far-western Cuba late Monday or early Tuesday, hitting near the country’s most famed tobacco fields. Cuba state media outlet Granma said authorities would begin evacuating people from vulnerable areas early Monday in Pinar del Rio. Classes there have been suspended.

At 5 a.m. EDT on Monday, Ian was moving northwest at 13 mph (20 kph), about 90 miles (150 kilometers) southwest of Grand Cayman, according to the center. It had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph).

“Ian is not expected to spend much time over western Cuba, and additional strengthening is likely over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday,” the hurricane center said. “Ian is likely to have an expanding wind field and will be slowing down by that time, which will have the potential to produce significant wind and storm surge impacts along the west coast of Florida.”

Florida residents were getting ready, lining up for hours in Tampa to collect bags of sand and clearing store shelves of bottled water.

A hurricane watch was issued for Florida's central western coast including the Tampa Bay area, where Hillsborough County suspended classes through Thursday to prepare schools to serve as shelters for evacuees. Additional watches for more northern areas along the peninsula’s west coast may be issued, Brown said.

‘#Ring_Nation’ Is a #Terrible_Idea That’s Unstoppable Because #Amazon Owns Everything?

Amazon owns #Ring, #MGM, and production company #Big_Fish_Entertainment. It owns #Prime_Video, and has the support of police around the country. What can stop it?

On Tuesday, 40 #civil_rights_groups published an open letter calling on MGM Television executives to #cancel the studio's upcoming #reality_show Ring Nation, which will feature former #NSA #employee and comedian #Wanda_Sykes presenting humorous #surveillance_footage captured from Ring doorbell cameras.

The groups say the studio is "normalizing and promoting Amazon Ring’s dangerous network of surveillance cameras," which, along with the Neighbors app, "violate basic privacy rights, fuel surveillance-based policing that disproportionately targets people of color and threatens abortion seekers, and enables vigilantes to surveil their neighbors and racially profile bystanders."

There's just one potential problem with the well-intentioned campaign: Amazon owns Ring, producer Big Fish Entertainment, and distributor MGM, and it also owns the Prime Video streaming service should it need somewhere to air it. It also has specific partnerships with thousands of police departments around the country should they happen to prove useful.

This tower of vertical integration means that Ring Nation is a show designed from the ground up to leverage Amazon's vast monopoly to push its own product on Americans, and it also means that it will probably (but not definitely) be impossible to kill. There’s very little chance that MGM executives will push back on the project when it's probably exactly the type of thing Amazon imagined being able to do when it spent $8.5 billion on a merger with MGM this year.

There is a kind of fifth column pushing this project over the line, too: Amazon and Ring's cozy relationship with police. As Motherboard has reported, Ring has forged partnerships with thousands of police departments and helped to foster a culture of paranoia around crime in U.S. suburbs while giving authorities a widespread video surveillance network to pull from—sometimes without a warrant.

Descending up to 40 meters #beneath the Baltic Sea, the world's longest immersed tunnel will link Denmark and Germany, slashing journey times between the #two_countries when it opens in 2029.

After more than a decade of planning, construction started on the #Fehmarnbelt_Tunnel in 2020 and in the months since a temporary harbor has been completed on the Danish side. It will host the factory that will soon build the 89 massive concrete sections that will make up the tunnel.

"The expectation is that the first production line will be ready around the end of the year, or beginning of next year," said Henrik Vincentsen, CEO of Femern A/S, the state-owned Danish company in charge of the project. "By the beginning of 2024 we have to be ready to immerse the first tunnel element."

After the Queen's death, her eldest son, Charles, took over as King of the United Kingdom.

However, not everyone seems to be happy with their new monarch.

The Royal Proclamation of Charles as King was greeted with #LOUD_BOOING from #locals in #Scotland's Capital, Edinburgh.

But those boos were #drowned_out by chants of 'God Save The King' and a booming gun salute.

Shortly after this, a woman was spotted with a banner which read, '#Abolish the #Monarchy'.

She was not alone as another lady raised a banner that read, 'NOT MY KING'.
