NEW WAVE of hits devices

-maker QNAP is urging customers to update their network-attached immediately to protect them from a new wave of ongoing ransomware attacks that can destroy of data in a single stroke.

QNAP said recently that it has identified a new campaign from a ransomware group known as . The attacks take aim at QNAP NAS devices that use a proprietary feature known as Photo Station. The advisory instructs customers to update their firmware, suggesting there is a vulnerability that’s under exploit, but the company makes no explicit mention of a CVE designation that security professionals use to track such security flaws.

“To protect your NAS from the DeadBolt ransomware, QNAP strongly recommends securing your QNAP NAS devices and routers by following these instructions,” company officials wrote:

Disable the port forwarding function on the router
Set up on the NAS to enable secure remote access and prevent exposure to the Internet
Update the firmware to the latest version
Update all applications on the NAS to their latest versions
Apply strong passwords for all user accounts on the NAS
Take and back up regularly to protect your data
The advisory applies to the following devices:

QTS 5.0.1: Photo Station 6.1.2 and later
QTS 5.0.0/4.5.x: Photo Station 6.0.22 and later
QTS 4.3.6: Photo Station 5.7.18 and later
QTS 4.3.3: Photo Station 5.4.15 and later
QTS 4.2.6: Photo Station 5.2.14 and later

DeadBolt first appeared in January, and within a few months, Internet security scanning service said the ransomware had infected thousands of QNAP devices. The company took the unusual step of automatically pushing the update to all devices, even those that had automatic updating turned off.

Now, DeadBolt is back. Users first learn of the infection in ransom notes like this one:

The US reviewed its North Korea policy last year and reiterated that "complete denuclearisation" of the Korean peninsula was the goal. Mr Biden said he would pursue it with a mix of diplomacy and "stern deterrence". Mr Kim responded by saying his country must prepare for both "dialogue and confrontation".

’s Largest to Be Before

The ship that would have become the world’s largest has been scrapped before it ever had the chance to take its .

If wasting wild amounts of resources and money is your type of thing, this is the story for you.

was slated to carry 9,000 and was built by shipbuilding firm to the tune of nearly $US1.4 ($2) , according to the Daily Mail. It was nearly finished when the company went at the start of this year.

Since that happened, has stepped up to buy the 20-deck, 341.99 m-long monstrosity.

That means it’s now destined for the . The Mail says that Global Dream II also features an outdoor waterpark and a movie theatre. Man, I really don’t get cruises.

The capacity of this ship blows the second largest ship, the Oasis-class Wonder of the Sea which is owned and operated by Royal Caribbean, out of the water (I love a good pun). The Wonder of the Seas has a passenger capacity of only 6,988. Pathetic.

Despite the $US1.4 ($2) billion put out to build this behemoth, the ship still needs about $US230,000,000 ($319,286,000) worth of work. Apparently, it is structurally complete, but equipment and passenger facilities still need to be finished.

Eagle-eyed readers will have noted the “II” in the ship’s name. Yes, there is a twin Global Dream, but it hasn’t been given the ax… yet.

clamps down on ''

France has taken steps to so-called dark stores - city-centre used for instant ordered over the .

Faced by from people as well as , President Emmanuel Macron's government has decreed that the be as , rather than as shops - meaning that in and other cities most will be to close.

Run by half a dozen competing companies such as , , , and , "dark stores" have proliferated in France as elsewhere over the last two years after confinement popularised .

in Paris urges to get their in less than 10 minutes - or "quicker than a double by Benzema", referring to the French football star. A campaign by Cajoo shows "Alex" doing his shopping by smartphone while sitting on the lavatory.

But residents of buildings where "dark stores" have replaced pre-existing grocery shops are angry about noise from early morning lorries and the disruption caused by squads of deliverers on electric bicycles and scooters.

City officials - who spent millions to safeguard the high street against out-of-town shopping centres - are worried that the new threat from "quick commerce" will drain life from public spaces and hasten the trend to an "atomised" society of solitary consumers.

"We can't sleep any more," said Samira, who has launched a petition against a "dark store" in her building in the 17th arrondissement of Paris.

"There is constant scooter noise, and the drivers hang outside till one in the morning, smoking weed and urinating on the street," she added.

Typically "dark stores" - of which there are about 80 in Paris - present a blank front to the street, with just the name of the company on a frosted window. But inside are shelves of commonly bought goods, which are stacked into bags and handed to waiting couriers.

The public has no access, and there is no possibility of buying the goods inside except by ordering over the internet.

Paris City Hall has tried for months to control the spread - but with limited success. Officials complain of legal loopholes which the operators have been able to exploit, and of fines too meagre to have an impact.

But after the capital joined forces with other cities like Lyon, Nice and Montpellier, their combined pressure this week convinced the government to clarify town planning laws and make it easier for municipalities to shut down "dark stores".

"Once this decree is finalised, there will be no ambiguity. Dark stores will be officially designated as warehouses, not as shops, which means local mayors will have powers to act if they choose," said Small Businesses Minister Olivia Grégoire after a meeting with city officials from across France.

"This is not just a question of noise and traffic disruption. It's a question of society," said Camille Augey, a deputy mayor of Lyon.

"We need to ask ourselves what we want. Does every need have to be immediately satisfied regardless of external consequences? Do we really need that packet of pasta or bottle of shampoo at 11 o'clock at night? Can it really not wait until the morning?"

"We managed perfectly well before quick commerce, didn't we?" she added.

None of the "dark store" operators contacted by the BBC would give an interview. In a statement Gorillas said that it brought "dynamism to town centres - creating jobs but also new outlets for local producers".

It said it would need time to study the government's new decree before reacting.

The separate phenomenon of "dark kitchens" - diner-less restaurants where meals are prepared for delivery - will also be affected by the new government policy, though it remains unclear exactly how.

employees and backers sue over Cash_Sanctions.

Six users of Tornado Cash, a popular service, filed a on Thursday against the U.S. Treasury Department, , and other officials over their decision to on the service in August.

The outcome of the case, which turns on the novel legal question of whether the U.S. government can impose sanctions on publicly available , is likely to have for the industry for years to come.

In a 20-page filed in in , the users claim the decision to sanction Tornado Cash exceeded the government’s authority; violated their free speech and property rights under the U.S. Constitution; and “threatens the ability of law-abiding Americans to engage freely and privately in financial transactions.”

In recent years, Tornado Cash has emerged as a popular tool for those wishing to hide their . Using on the , it allows users to deposit crypto into a pool alongside other users and then distribute it to third-party wallets; the process makes it highly difficult to determine who gave funds to a given wallet.

The plaintiffs in the case include , a prominent figure in the Ethereum community who claims he cannot access thousands of dollars worth of Ethereum deposited with Tornado Cash, and his brother, Joseph, who says he intended to use the service to privately fund an Ethereum node and staking service but can no longer do so because of the sanctions.

The plaintiffs also include , a California security analyst at , who alleges that he used Tornado Cash to make anonymous to support Ukraine. Almeida claims the U.S. placing sanctions on the service impedes his right to donate—and by extension his right to express himself under the First Amendment.

Almeida is one of two Coinbase employees to put their name on the lawsuit. The company, whose CEO, Brian Armstrong, has vocally objected to the sanctions on Tornado Cash, is paying the legal bills of the employees and four other plaintiffs.

“We didn’t do this lightly. We have lots of respect for [sanctions agency] OFAC and Treasury for their work keeping us safe,” said Coinbase’s head lawyer, Paul Grewal, who added that the company believes the government overstepped its authority by placing sanctions on code.

on ??

The decision by the Treasury Department to impose sanctions on code used by Tornado Cash has alarmed the crypto industry and the broader software development community who fear the move will and .

The legal regime used to the is hardly new—it was crafted under (DavidV side note: a of ) as a means to combat the increasingly sophisticated financial tools used by terrorists and rogue states to launder money and skirt sanctions.

Until now, however, the Treasury has imposed the sanctions—violations of which bring severe penalties—on people or companies. But in the Tornado Cash case, the target of the sanctions is not a specific entity but a series of smart contracts.

“The Tornado Cash privacy protocol consists of perpetually self-executing code on the Ethereum blockchain that cannot be altered, edited, or otherwise controlled,” the complaint notes.

Scientists Create Controlled by

The cockroaches might be used in and missions or for environmental monitoring in the future.

In a series of experiments, the team demonstrated how the system could steer the roach right, as desired, via a system. You can see that above.

And, for now, that's as far as they've got.

"The current system only has a wireless locomotion control system, so it's not enough to prepare an application such as urban rescue," said Kenjiro Fukuda, an expert in flexible electronics at Japan's Riken. "By integrating other required devices such as sensors and cameras, we can use our cyborg insects for such purposes."

Fukuda notes cameras would likely require a lot more power, but there are sensors that use little power that could be integrated into the system today. If cameras were able to be used, they would likely be very low resolution.

Notably, because of the design of the ultrathin solar cell, Fukuda notes it could be applied to other insects -- potentially even creating a flying army of robot insects controlled by human hands. Beetles and cicadas are potential candidates.

Insect robots are having a bit of a moment. In July, researchers at Rice University unveiled their spider "necrobots" -- insect-machine hybrids they used to create the world's creepiest claw machine.

But those spiders were dead. The roaches aren't.

I must admit that when I saw the images of the roboroaches crawling in a certain direction, I felt a weird pang of... guilt. Or something like it, perhaps. I wondered if there was any sort of understanding by the creepy crawlers that their legs are being steered against their own will and whether this process was painful. Fortunately, "according to research related to insects, cockroaches do not experience pain," said Fukuda. Phew.

However, there has been some research in recent years looking at how insects might experience emotive states and discussion about the ethical implications of such research. A recent piece in Undark magazine wrestled with the question of insect pain, too, noting there's still a lack of understanding about insect consciousness.

India is planning to WINNERS in ;)

BIG TO :)

The Indian government is looking to tax winnings of online games as the sector grows in popularity.

Direct tax officials are scrutinising the data for up to 58,000 crore rupees ($7.2 billion) won over the past three years on an online gaming platform, The Indian Express newspaper reported today (Sept. 5).

Authorities have urged taxpayers to file taxes on such undeclared winnings for the past two assessment years, 2019-20 and 2020-21, the report said.

“Some may have earned more and some less...They are usually in a ledger account and they merge win and loss, it (data) is humongous,” Nitin Gupta, chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes, told The Indian Express.

More than 20,000 taxpayers have filed updated returns for both 2020-21 and 2021-22 until Sept. 02, with undeclared tax payments valued at over Rs50 crore.

A 28% tax may hamper India’s online gaming sector
In May, India’s finance ministry proposed 28% GST on all earnings from online games, regardless of whether the game is based on skill or chance.

The GST council will now review this during its meeting this month.

“...levying 28% GST on this [online gaming] sector may impact the growth and future investment in this niche field,” Pratik Jain, partner at PriceWaterhouse & Co, told CNBCTV-18 in July.

“The GST council may want to distinguish between the game of chance and a game of skill. While the game of chance may warrant a higher levy, GST on the game of skills should be ideally retained at 18%.”

The industry makes a significant contribution to India’s GST revenues—more than Rs2,200 crores—a study by EY and Assocham showed.

In the financial year 2020-21, the industry was worth Rs13,600 crore. It is likely to reach Rs29,000 crore by 2025, according to a KPMG report.

The proposed taxation of 28%, along with 30% income tax on winnings, takes the total tax rate on online gaming between 45-50%, industry experts said.

This could spell “game over” for the fledgeling industry.

Turning on Project Loon in Puerto Rico
Last month, Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico as a Category 4 hurricane and caused significant damage to the island’s connectivity infrastructure. In the weeks following this disaster, the Project Loon team has been working with the Government of Puerto Rico, the FCC, the FAA, FEMA, spectrum partners and international aviation authorities to bring balloon powered internet to the island to help. Thanks to their support, we are now collaborating with AT&T and T-Mobile to deliver emergency internet service to the hardest hit parts of the island.

Working with AT&T and T-Mobile, Project Loon is now supporting basic communication and internet activities like sending text messages and accessing information online for some people with LTE enabled phones. This is the first time we have used our new machine learning powered algorithms to keep balloons clustered over Puerto Rico, so we’re still learning how best to do this. As we get more familiar with the constantly shifting winds in this region, we hope to keep the balloons over areas where connectivity is needed for as long as possible.
