Local municipalities have reported a substantial amount of RAW sewage spilled by circumstances during #Tropical_Storm_Debby.
🚨 Since Aug. 4, at least 6.6 million gallons of RAW sewage discharged during numerous incidents at treatment facilities, lift stations, and manholes throughout Sarasota and Manatee counties. Not all spills came into contact with local waterways, but the discharges resulted in millions of gallons of sewage spilled into bodies of water that feed into Sarasota Bay.
Millions of gallons of RAW sewage spilled in Sarasota County
Municipalities in Sarasota County reported at least 2.87 million gallons of RAW sewage spilled as a result of Tropical Storm Debby.
On Aug. 7, #Sarasota_County reported RAW sewage overflows at nine out of 785 lift stations because of rainfall, power outages and clogs caused by Tropical Storm Debby. Those lift stations are located at Beneva Woods, Coral Club, Gulf Gate, Linwood, Longwood, Osprey, Riverview, Siesta Key and Willow Leaf. Authorities estimate that 792,700 gallons of sewage spilled from those locations combined.
The largest overflow occurred at the Siesta Key Regional Lift Station with 309,000 gallons of sewage spilled, followed by the Linwood Regional Lift Station with 252,000 gallons.
#North_Port also reported a 1.728 million gallon spill on Aug. 7 from its wastewater treatment plant into a nearby stream after holding ponds filled up because of heavy rain.
On Aug. 5, the city of Sarasota reported sewage overflows in several locations beginning mid-morning on Aug. 5 and ending Aug. 6. The city indicated that excessive rainfall and storm surge overwhelmed the system. The discharge volume could not be accurately estimated, although it is no less than 1,000 gallons.
Also on Aug. 5, the #Englewood Water District reported an overflow at its Holiday Ventures lift station located on Haligan Way. About 350,000 gallons of sewage flowed into a decommissioned pond on the property. No state or public waters were affected during the spill. About 300,000 gallons of the waste was recovered.
The city of #Bradenton and facilities operated by #Manatee_County reported at least 3.76 million gallons of RAW sewage spilled during the tropical storm, although the county only reported that spills crossed the 1,000-gallon minimum threshold for reporting and did not provide actual estimates.
On Aug. 4, the city of Bradenton bypassed 3.5 million gallons of partially treated sewage from its water reclamation facility into the #Manatee_River. The city also reported an overflow at a lift station at 190115th Avenue W. that resulted in 250,000 gallons of wastewater discharged from a manhole on 17th Avenue West.
On Aug. 5, the #Manatee_County North Regional Water Reclamation Facility at 8500 69th Street East in #Palmetto reported that partially treated sewage discharged onto plant grounds through a drainage station and a manhole. Later that morning other discharges spilled additional sewage onto plant grounds. The discharge volume could not be accurately estimated, although it is no less than 1,000 gallons.
