X, formerly known as Twitter, can now claim the dubious achievement of “worst-performing platform for online disinformation,” and its users continue to flock to other social media sites to avoid its toxic content.

X users have primarily fled to Threads, Mastodon, and Bluesky.

X doesn't formally report monthly active user (MAU) stats, but estimates put X's MAU losses at close to -4% during 2023 and between -30 and -50 million MAUs since Musk bought it.

X Premium (previously Twitter Blue) Service has about 830,000 paid subscribers, far short of Musk's earlier predictions of 69 million subscribers by 2025.

Media researchers concluded X has become a breeding ground for overtly racist and antisemitic discourse, propaganda, and misinformation - including Musk's own posts - fueled by monetization/revenue sharing with extremist accounts.

X's ad revenue has declined at least -55% year-over-year each month since Musk took over.

To help determine which social media platforms X users were likely migrating to, researchers scoured the bios of active X users. During Q3, Mastodon was by far the the most mentioned – about three times as often as Bluesky, Post.news, or Threads.

While Meta's Threads has captured the bulk of X migrants, open-source Mastodon has scooped up a respectable share. Mastodon now registers about 1.5 million new users per month. Mastodon has about 1.5 million MAUs and a total of 10.7 million registered users.

Jack Dorsey's Bluesky now has over 1 million registered users while it remains in beta as an invite-only platform.

After Musk dramatically increased the price of X's API access, third-party developers have shifted their attention to open-source protocols such as ActivityPub that powers Mastodon and the AT Protocol that powers Bluesky.

Musk aims to build X into an “Everything App,” such as WeChat in China, but all signs point to a rough road to getting there, if not a dead end.
