Trump has something libertarians need : brand awareness.
But libertarians have something Trump needs INFINITELY MORE : coherent ideology.
If there was a bill to eliminate the FBI, can you honestly say you know how Trump would vote?
People who back Trump do so because they love his personality, or because they detest the Dems, or because "bidenomics" has left them in desperation. But this is unsustainable.
The populous of a republic is fickle: one day they love you, the next day they hate you. Without a coherent ideology, Trump is navigating dangerous waters. He could very easily win in November only to be hog-tied by congress and spend another term making memes and battling impeachment.
But if he could manage a "conversion" to libertarianism, then he becomes a part of something bigger than himself : an unwavering 3% who have the collective political muscle to make Trump-bashing a risky proposition. In such an event, he might hope to place himself in history with the likes of Bukele and Milei.
So in reality, Trump's message "join me and we'll win" is a message to himself. He already has the votes to win in November, he doesn't need anything from the Libertarians on that front. What he needs is the ideological foundation to convert that win into a successful presidency over the next four years.
