📕 #WhenIwas12.. Just an ordinary #neighborhood_kid -seeking some #spare_change.. 💰

🍼 Bottle returns wasn't cutting it.. Back in the day; one could make money 'for' #recycling. The way it should be today IMHO!.. but that's another story..

🤪 One day at 12 years old, I was hanging out with friends and overheard one saying that a #parade is coming to town and they need kids to #sell_parade_programs? 📕

Immediately my ears 👂 perked up since a #J_O_B at my age was tough -considering I was #underage to #work #officially.

Received further details of the parade and ended up at the program #distribution center at 6 am. Literally a 100 kids #waiting_in_line for #parade_programs to sell.

My turn came next and they gave me 50 programs. I ask them, " #How do we #sell these"? They said, "Just go outside and start selling them".
#TRAINING_OVER I guess.. I ask for #another 50 programs. I had 100 programs clinched in my hands:)

We were to sell them at $0.25 cents a piece.

While myself and 30 other kids stood outside, programs firmly grasped in hand -looking at each other wondering #OK_WHAT_NOW?.. Duh!

I stood and watched the other kids for a while.. I noticed the crowd all lined up waiting for the parade floats to PASS by.. Still watching the rest of the kids to see if I could pick up any pointers. #Wishful_thinking on my part. chuckles.

But while watching I realized the other kids were selling the programs to the #BACK of the #Crowd. I said to myself, "I'll #never sell many programs that way!"

"I NEED TO #GET IN #FRONT OF THE #CROWD!:)"

So with a few " #ex_squeeze_mez " (excuse me:) I ended up at the front of the crowd!

" #PARADE_PROGRAMS FOR #SALE" I #SHOUTED! -at the top of my lungs.

Within 10 minutes I sold 100 programs. YEAH!

I RAN back to the warehouse for more programs (.. #rinse and #repeat ;)

200 this time. Sold them in 20 min flat! At the end of the day I had $120.00 in my pocket. Not bad daily pay for a 12 year old kid considering min wage was $1.20 or less -cant remember.

Next year at 13, I #CAME_BACK with a #VENGEANCE!

Arrived at the program #warehouse at 5am. They #remembered_me from the amount of programs I sold the year prior..

This time I asked for 10 boxes!! 500 programs per box!! She let me have them to my surprise.

#THE_PLAN:

I decided I was going to hide these boxes in #bushes along the way of the parade (which stretched a few miles) so I wouldn't need to keep #running_back (aka #Time_Management) for more programs -which wasted most of my time to sell.

I located the boxes in #strategic places >> equally spaced >> where they would not be seen. (bushes;) along the 3 mile run of the parade.

While distributing the boxes the first thing I noticed was that the other kids where still selling programs to the BACK of the crowd..

I thought to myself.. Hmmm. #No_Competition;)

As soon as I was able to get back to the parades starting line, I headed to the front of the crowd.

To #MY_SHOCK, standing in front of me.. #WAS_A_COP! Not only that BUT many Cops -- along the way. In fact, they were spread out every 300 feet, I think:(

...and wont allow ANYONE to stand outside past the curb.. Ummm THATS #ME BTW!:(

What #TODO?!!!

~Hmmm -NOW WHAT!? "OK," I said to myself. All I need to do is a little - #Dipping and #Diving~.

And that's what I did! When I got within 50 feet of an " #officer" :) I would #dip back into the crowd, AND #dive back to the #FRONT OF THE #CROWD.

Plus Hey, I was just a #kid. Many OFFICERS just ignored me.. or thought -- I was just #part of the #parade;) ..

Sold all 10 boxes (5000 programs) made more money than most KIDS MY AGE have ever seen, especially my friends, -most likely -at that age -in that era.. perhaps..not sure.. chuckles

Food for thought. I didn't even realize that I was in the #advertising_business at 12 years of age- and for many years to follow..
