Abdullah al-Yazuri, narrator of the BBC documentary “Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone”, has responded to claims that he is not from Gaza due to his fluency in English. Speaking from Gaza’s coastline, he highlights the destruction around him as proof of his reality, pointing to a ruined building as just one example of the widespread devastation.

He briefly recounts his displacement through multiple camps, including Khan Younis, Rafah and al-Mawasi, describing al-Mawasi as the most difficult place he had endured. He also thanks those who supported the documentary and expresses hope that their efforts will persuade the BBC to reinstate it.

The documentary, which the BBC pulled from its streaming platform following an intense campaign by pro-Israel groups and rival British media outlets, depicted nine months of life in Gaza under siege through the eyes and experiences of Palestinian children.

Criticism of the documentary centered on revelations that Abdullah’s father, Ayman al-Yazuri, is a deputy minister of agriculture in Gaza’s government, which is administered by Hamas.

However, Middle East Eye reported that Abdullah’s father appears to be a technocrat with a scientific background, having previously worked for the United Arab Emirates’ education ministry and studied at British universities.

In his first interview with Middle East Eye, Gaza: How to Survive a War Zone’s 13-year-old narrator Abdullah al-Yazuri speaks out after the BBC removed the documentary.

Abdullah, who spent nine months working on the film, says he was left devastated: "I recorded more than 60 hours of footage, and it was all wiped. It is extremely disappointing and heartbreaking for me."

Facing harassment and threats, he holds the BBC accountable: "If anything happens to me, the BBC is responsible."

He also calls for the documentary’s reinstatement, saying: "I was very impartial in this film. I did not add or take away anything. The script I read was provided by the production company."

The BBC removed the documentary following pressure from British officials, pro-Israel groups, and media figures over the fact that Abdullah’s father is a deputy minister of agriculture in Gaza’s government. The broadcaster later apologized, saying it had only learned of his family connection after the documentary aired.
