The #Execution of the One #Million #German_Soldiers Captured by #Stalin
At the end of World War II, millions of German soldiers fell into #Soviet hands as prisoners of war (POW). While many were sent to forced labor camps across the Soviet Union, it is believed that a significant number—possibly up to one million—were deliberately executed under Stalin’s orders. These executions, carried out in secret, were part of a broader policy of vengeance and retribution for the devastation inflicted by the #Nazi invasion of the #Soviet_Union, which had resulted in the #deaths of millions of #Soviet citizens.
The fate of these German POWs varied depending on the region and circumstances of their capture. Some were #shot #immediately on the #battlefield, while others were #transported to #remote locations, where they were either #executed #en_masse or left to die from #starvation, #exposure, and #forced_labor in extreme conditions. The Soviet #gulags, infamous for their brutality, became the final destination for many prisoners, where they faced #inhumane_treatment, #malnutrition, and #death due to #exhaustion.
