The #Execution of the One #Million #German_Soldiers Captured by #Stalin
At the end of World War II, millions of German soldiers fell into #Soviet hands as prisoners of war (POW). While many were sent to forced labor camps across the Soviet Union, it is believed that a significant number—possibly up to one million—were deliberately executed under Stalin’s orders. These executions, carried out in secret, were part of a broader policy of vengeance and retribution for the devastation inflicted by the #Nazi invasion of the #Soviet_Union, which had resulted in the #deaths of millions of #Soviet citizens.
The fate of these German POWs varied depending on the region and circumstances of their capture. Some were #shot #immediately on the #battlefield, while others were #transported to #remote locations, where they were either #executed #en_masse or left to die from #starvation, #exposure, and #forced_labor in extreme conditions. The Soviet #gulags, infamous for their brutality, became the final destination for many prisoners, where they faced #inhumane_treatment, #malnutrition, and #death due to #exhaustion. Stalin’s approach was not only punitive but also aimed at ensuring that Germany would #never_rise_again as a military threat.
Unlike the Western Allies, who largely abided by the Geneva Convention?? The full extent of these executions remains a subject of historical debate, as Soviet archives have only partially revealed the details of #Stalin’s policies towards German POWs. What is clear, however, is that the #mass_deaths of these soldiers were a tragic yet largely overlooked consequence of World War II. Their fate serves as a #stark_reminder of the #brutal_realities of total war and the #cycle of #retribution that followed the #fall of the #Third_Reich.
