🇹🇷 ANKARA, #Turkey — #NSO Group’s #Pegasus spyware was used to secretly target the smartphones of the two women closest to murdered Saudi columnist Jamal Khashoggi, according to digital forensic analysis.
🇹🇷 The Android phone of his wife, Hanan Elatr, was targeted by a Pegasus user six months before his killing, but the analysis could not determine whether the hack was successful. The iPhone of his fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, was penetrated by spyware days after the murder, the forensics showed.
Their cellphone numbers appeared on a list of more than 50,000 numbers that are concentrated in countries known to spy on their citizens and also known to have been NSO clients.
Another of Khashoggi’s close associates was successfully hacked after the journalist’s murder. Two other associates and two senior Turkish officials involved in his homicide investigation appear on the list.
NSO executives have asserted that its spyware was not used to monitor Khashoggi or his family.
But a Pegasus user sent texts to Elatr, an Egyptian flight attendant Khashoggi fell in love with and eventually married, with links that could have implanted spyware; the user twice masqueraded as her sister. The texts were sent November 2017 and again in April 2018, six months before Khashoggi’s murder on Oct. 2, 2018, according to a digital forensic examination conducted by Amnesty International’s Security Lab.
She has no memory of clicking on the links. Because she was using an Android phone, Amnesty’s researcher was unable to determine whether the device was successfully penetrated. Unlike iPhones, Androids do not log the kinds of information required for Amnesty’s detective work.
During the months when the targeting occurred, Elatr and Khashoggi were talking and texting multiple times a week, she said in recent interviews. 🇹🇷 #Jamal_Khashoggi’s #WIFE #TARGETED with #SPYWARE before his #DEATH The cellphones of #murdered #Saudi_columnist’s fiancee and associate hacked #after his #murder
🇹🇷 ANKARA, #Turkey — #NSO Group’s #Pegasus spyware was used to secretly target the smartphones of the two women closest to murdered Saudi columnist Jamal Khashoggi, according to digital forensic analysis.
🇹🇷 The Android phone of his wife, Hanan Elatr, was targeted by a Pegasus user six months before his killing, but the analysis could not determine whether the hack was successful. The iPhone of his fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, was penetrated by spyware days after the murder, the forensics showed.
Their cellphone numbers appeared on a list of more than 50,000 numbers that are concentrated in countries known to spy on their citizens and also known to have been NSO clients.
Another of Khashoggi’s close associates was successfully hacked after the journalist’s murder. Two other associates and two senior Turkish officials involved in his homicide investigation appear on the list.
NSO executives have asserted that its spyware was not used to monitor Khashoggi or his family.
But a Pegasus user sent texts to Elatr, an Egyptian flight attendant Khashoggi fell in love with and eventually married, with links that could have implanted spyware; the user twice masqueraded as her sister. The texts were sent November 2017 and again in April 2018, six months before Khashoggi’s murder on Oct. 2, 2018, according to a digital forensic examination conducted by Amnesty International’s Security Lab.
She has no memory of clicking on the links. Because she was using an Android phone, Amnesty’s researcher was unable to determine whether the device was successfully penetrated. Unlike iPhones, Androids do not log the kinds of information required for Amnesty’s detective work.
During the months when the targeting occurred, Elatr and Khashoggi were talking and texting multiple times a week, she said in recent interviews. They also met in person three times in various locations. Khashoggi taught her to use various apps because he thought switching among them would help thwart surveillance, she said.

📱 #Pegasus_Spyware Found on #Journalists’ #Phones, #French_Intelligence CONFIRMS | French intelligence #investigators have confirmed that Pegasus spyware has been found on the phones of three journalists, including a #senior member of staff at the country’s international #television station #France_24.
🏴☠️ It is the first time an #independent and #official authority has #corroborated the findings of an #international_investigation by the Pegasus project – a consortium of 17 media outlets, including the Guardian. Forbidden Stories, a Paris-based nonprofit media organization, and Amnesty International initially had access to a leaked list of 50,000 numbers that, it is believed, have been identified as those of people of interest by clients of Israeli firm NSO Group since 2016, and shared access with their media partners.
🇫🇷 France’s national agency for information systems security (Anssi) identified digital traces of NSO Group’s hacking spyware on the television journalist’s phone and relayed its findings to the Paris public prosecutor’s office, which is overseeing the investigation into possible hacking.
Anssi also found Pegasus on telephones belonging to Lénaïg Bredoux, an investigative journalist at the French investigative website Mediapart, and the site’s director, Edwy Plenel.

📱 The spyware was #silently_delivered, likely over #iMessage. NSO #sells governments and nation states #access to its #Pegasus_spyware as a #prepackaged service by providing the #infrastructure and the #exploits needed to launch the spyware against the customer’s #targets. But the spyware maker has repeatedly #distanced itself from what its customers do and has said it does not know who its customers target. Some of NSO’s known customers include #authoritarian_regimes. #Saudi_Arabia allegedly used the #surveillance technology to spy on the #communications of columnist #Jamal_Khashoggi shortly before his murder, which U.S. intelligence concluded was likely ordered by the kingdom’s de facto ruler, Crown Prince #Mohammed_bin_Salman.
Citizen Lab said it also found #evidence that #Dridi, a journalist at Arabic television station #Al_Araby in #London, had fallen #victim to a zero-click #attack. The researchers said Dridi was likely targeted by the #UAE_government.
In a phone call, Dridi told TechCrunch that her phone may have been targeted because of her close association to a person of interest to the UAE.
Dridi’s phone, an iPhone XS Max, was targeted for a longer period, likely between October 2019 and July 2020. The researchers found evidence that she was targeted on two separate occasions with a zero-day attack.
