200,000 WordPress Sites at #Risk from Critical #Authentication #Bypass #Vulnerability in #Burst_Statistics #Plugin
On May 8, 2026, PRISM, Wordfence Threat Intelligence's autonomous vulnerability research platform, discovered a critical Authentication Bypass vulnerability in Burst Statistics, a WordPress plugin with more than 200,000 active installations.
This vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers who know a valid administrator username to fully impersonate that administrator for the duration of any REST API request, enabling actions such as creating new administrator accounts with no prior authentication.
Vulnerability Details:
- CVE ID: CVE-2026-8181
- CVSS Score: 9.8 (Critical)
- Vulnerability Type: Authentication Bypass to Admin Account Takeover
- Affected Versions: 3.4.0 - 3.4.1.1
- Patched Version: 3.4.2
Unfortunately, insecure return-value handling in the plugin's MainWP integration allows unauthenticated attackers to impersonate any administrator for the lifetime of a REST API request.
The Burst Statistics plugin includes a proxy integration with the MainWP site management platform.
This integration implements a custom HTTP authentication scheme.
The critical flaw lies in the is_mainwp_authenticated() function.
This function treats any non-WP_Error return from wp_authenticate_application_password() as successful authentication.
WordPress core may return null when Application Passwords are not in use.
Since null is not a WP_Error, the plugin's guard silently passes even though no password validation occurred.
This allows an attacker who knows a valid admin username to send a single HTTP request with a fake password to any REST endpoint.
From there, they can create a new administrator account with no real credentials.
Researcher Credit:
This vulnerability was discovered by Chloe Chamberland and PRISM, Wordfence Threat Intelligence's autonomous vulnerability research platform.
Wordfence Protection:
Wordfence Premium, Wordfence Care, and Wordfence Response users received a firewall rule to protect against any exploits targeting this vulnerability on May 8, 2026.
Sites using the free version of Wordfence will receive the same protection 30 days later, on June 7, 2026.

Perry-Bey of Hampton, alleges that Trump is “constitutionally ineligible under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment” to run for federal office “based on his engagement in insurrection against the United States” following the 2020 presidential election.
Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol Building on Jan. 6, 2021, emboldened by Trump’s unproven claims that the recent election was marred with fraud. He is currently set to stand trial, facing numerous charges, as the U.S. Department of Justice works to prove that he was directly responsible for the violence that day.

WASHINGTON, December 11, 2024—The Federal Communications Commission today adopted new rules to expand very low power device operations across all 1,200 megahertz of the 6 GHz band alongside other unlicensed and Wi-Fi-enabled devices. This added flexibility in the 6 GHz band will bolster a growing eco-system of cutting-edge applications like wearable technologies and augmented and virtual reality, which will enhance learning opportunities, improve healthcare outcomes, and bring new entertainment experiences. The FCC has, in recent years, expanded unlicensed use between 5.925 and 7.125 GHz, helping to usher in Wi-Fi 6E, set the stage for Wi-Fi 7, and support the growth of the Internet of Things.
The Report and Order permits the very low power (VLP) class of unlicensed devices to operate across 350 megahertz of spectrum in the U-NII-6 (6.425-6.525 GHz) and U-NII-8 (6.875-7.125 GHz) portions of the 6 GHz band at the same power levels and technical/operational protections as recently approved for the U-NII-5 (5.925-6.425 GHz) and U-NII-7 (6.525-6.875 GHz) bands while protecting incumbent licensed services that also operate in the band. These VLP devices will have no restriction on locations where they may operate and will not be required to operate under the control of an automatic frequency coordination system. To ensure the risk of interference remains insignificant, the devices will be required to employ a contention-based protocol and implement transmit power control while prohibited from operating as part of a fixed outdoor infrastructure.
VLP devices operate at very low power across short distances and provide very high connection speeds, which are ideal for the types of high-data rate cutting-edge applications that will both enrich consumer experiences and bolster the nation’s economy. Perry-Bey of Hampton, alleges that Trump is “constitutionally ineligible under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment” to run for federal office “based on his engagement in insurrection against the United States” following the 2020 presidential election.
Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol Building on Jan. 6, 2021, emboldened by Trump’s unproven claims that the recent election was marred with fraud. He is currently set to stand trial, facing numerous charges, as the U.S. Department of Justice works to prove that he was directly responsible for the violence that day.
